We heard that Solms Deltas picnics are very popular, and we experienced this first hand when we counted more than 50 picnic baskets lined up in the restaurant, waiting to be collected, so be sure to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
At Solms Delta you are spoilt for choice as to where to set down your picnic basket. If you prefer being seated, grab a table and chairs under one of the shady oak trees on the lawn across the restaurant. This is also a great spot to sit and share a bottle of wine with friends, even if you are not picnicking.
The jewel in this wine estates crown must be the picnic area in the forest next to the Banghoek River and here the choices to sit and relax are truly overwhelming. There is a huge lawn for the kids to run around on, many quiet hidden nooks next to the river, where on hot days you will find adults and kids cooling down in the water. Next to the picnic area with the river there is also a very tranquil dam with loads of birdlife. Here, in the middle of the large pond you can even have a whole island to yourself, from where you can enjoy views of the Franschoek mountains in the distance, and delight in the birdlife teeming around you.
Solms Delta serves one of the best gourmet picnic baskets that we have had thus far, including smoked snoek pate, ribs and some great salads. The basket has also changed over time, but we do not know how often and when it changes. The picnic basket excludes drinks, which is great as then you have the choice of what you want to drink, be it soft drinks or wine.
P.S. The picnic basket also includes a free wine tasting, so making a choice of what wine to add to your basket is now a lot easier.
